Nate Smith

Nate Smith is the Director of the Wilderness Education & Outdoor Leadership program at Lake Tahoe Community College. He holds a PhD, M.S., and B.S. in Health Promotion and Education from the University of Utah, covering a wide spectrum of the field. His extensive teaching experience, including 150+ courses over 34 academic terms, reflects his commitment to education and innovative curriculum design.

Formerly the Director of Outdoor Education and Leadership at Bucknell University, Nate redesigned and grew six unique university programs, oversaw 165 student staff, and engaged in community collaboration efforts. His contributions extended globally, working with students on educational excursions.

Nate has been a AMGA Single Pitch Instructor course provider and examiner since 2009. He also holds certifications as an AMGA Assistant Ski & Alpine Guide, a Wilderness First Responder/CPR Trainer, and an Avalanche Level 3.

Nate, his wife, Sarah, and their pups are avid long distance alpine runners. In 2024, Nate completed the Swiss Peaks 380, a 380 km / 236 mile race traversing 25900 m elevation gain, 26900 m elevation loss.
